Your 1-2-3 Tool Kit for business start-up starts here and now:
Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to start your own small business. You’re in a good place, and now is the right time: In 2015, approximately 300 new businesses were registered in Rockingham County.

There are a lot of big tasks ahead for you and your business in acquiring and managing resources, and you’ll find help for that on our Services and Partners page. However, right now you’re going to start the process of registering your business in Rockingham County:

Step 1: Make your plan. You wouldn’t build a house without a blueprint, or take a trip without directions to your destination. Your business plan is your blueprint and roadmap to your destination of success. Click here for important documents, instructions and contact information.

Step 2: Select your name and structure. Think carefully about these decisions as they will have far-reaching consequences. Your legal structure will determine legal and tax obligations, financial liability and decision-making authority. If you do not choose a structure, by North Carolina statute your business will be automatically defaulted to either Sole Proprietorship or General Partnership (if owned by more than a single individual). Click here for forms and more information.

Step 3: Make it legal with business license, permits and tax. You can’t operate a car in North Carolina without a license, and you can’t operate a business, either. Click here for information and contacts.

That’s it. Now you’re up and running. Congratulations! We look forward to working with you!
